Applications
Where CR-39 Detectors Are Used
CR-39 is the most widely used passive solid-state nuclear track detector in the world. For comprehensive technical details, visit our main CR-39 product page.
Neutron Detection
Boron-coated CR-39 captures thermal and epithermal neutrons via the 10B(n,α)7Li reaction. Used in reactor characterization, criticality safety, and shielding validation.
Alpha Spectroscopy
Track diameter and depth reveal alpha-particle energy. Ideal for characterizing sources, studying energy loss through thin films, and identifying isotopes by their signature track morphology.
Radon Monitoring
Deploy CR-39 in homes, mines, and workplaces to measure cumulative radon exposure over weeks or months. A proven, low-cost alternative to active electronic monitors.
Personnel Dosimetry
Worn as a passive badge to record neutron and charged-particle dose in nuclear facilities, accelerator labs, and medical environments.
Education
A tangible way for students to see the effects of radiation. Pair with our Learning Radiation Kit for a complete classroom experience.
Water Quality Testing
Screen drinking water for alpha-emitting radioisotopes with our Radioisotopes in Water Test — simple sample prep, professional lab analysis, and a clear risk report.
Frequently asked questions
Ordering CR-39 Detectors
How do I order CR-39 detectors?
Fill out the order inquiry form below with your desired chip type, quantity, and any special requirements. Our team typically responds within one business day with a formal quote. For urgent needs, email us directly at info@blankslateinnovation.com or call. We accept purchase orders from universities, government agencies, and commercial labs.
What sizes are available?
Our standard sizes are 1 cm × 2 cm and 1 in² (2.54 cm × 2.54 cm). We also cut custom rectangular geometries to match specific detector holders, collimator apertures, or experimental fixtures. Minimum thickness is approximately 1 mm. Describe your dimensions in the order form and we will confirm feasibility and pricing.
Do you offer boron-coated CR-39?
Yes. BSI manufactures boron-coated CR-39 in-house for thermal and epithermal neutron detection via the 10B(n,α)7Li capture reaction. Our coating methodology and performance data are published in a peer-reviewed paper: Boron Nitride Coatings for CR-39. Boron-coated chips are $6 per chip with bulk discounts above 100 units.
What analysis capabilities does BSI offer?
Beyond selling raw detectors, BSI provides a full-service analysis pipeline. Ship your exposed CR-39 back to us and we perform chemical etching, SEM large-area mapping, and AI-driven track classification — returning particle counts, type identification, energy estimates, and source-versus-noise discrimination. Our AI analysis methodology is detailed in our peer-reviewed publication on AI analysis of CR-39 with SEM large area mapping. Visit the main CR-39 page for full details.
