Neutron Sensitized CR-39 for Nuclear Particle Track Detection (1″ square)

$6.00 per square

The thermoset polymer, CR-39, is used in nuclear particle tracing and calorimetry as a solid state nuclear track detector (SSNTD). By applying a coating of an element that undergoes an n,p/d/t/a reaction, the CR-39 can become sensitized to neutrons of specific energy ranges. The energy and flux of incoming neutrons can be understood by comparing the coated and uncoated sides of the CR-39. Coatings can include natural boron, natural lithium, and nitrogen. These coatings are applied with a non-toxic, water soluble adhesive that dissolves in the developing solution and does not effect etching rate.

Thermal Neutron Sensing

We recommend that you contact us as you are planning and designing your neutron sensing application. Our neutron detectors use a boron coating on one side of the pane, and must reference a pane nearby that senses the ambient alpha particle flux at the location of the neutron sensor. Hence, we recommend purchasing at least as many uncoated panes as coated panes for your neutron sensing applications. There are additional techniques to detect intermediate and high energy neutrons. Contact us for more information.

Measurement Equipment

BSI will gladly process your exposed CR-39 panes, using either our optical or SEM analysis equipment and procedures, which include AI analysis and counting tools. Please contact us for a quote that is based on the extent of your job.

Alternatively, we offer classes in how to process and analyze your panes yourself, and we can sell you the necessary equipment needed to do so. Please call to discuss your application, and to receive a quote.

We estimate that the cost to purchase the necessary equipment to process your own samples optically will come to about $2,000, if reconditioned, used equipment is selected.

This will include:

  1. a temperature-controlled hot plate and associated chemicals and glassware
  2. a reconditioned optical microscope with an ocular electronic camera
  3. a laptop computer
  4. commercial and customs software
  5. common laboratory equipment and computer supplies

We at BSI will gladly provide a full-up reconditioned system for this price, or we will work with you as you integrate some or all of this equipment into your existing laboratory. If you prefer, then all new equipment with factory warrantees may be purchased at about twice this price. Again, contact us for a custom assembly plan and a quote.
